Antigua
Larry Wanger
My wife and I sailed on the
Sun Princes and visited Antigua's capital city on a Sunday in mid-February
2004. All and all I would say the visit was good and that we had a great
time. This being our first cruise and our first port of call on the cruise
we were quite uncertain about what we should expect. We found that because
it was a Sunday, many of the shops were closed and quickly decided that we
would seek out a taxi driver and a tour of the island. Finding a driver
was not hard and we found a few that even showed us a detailed map and the
places we would visit. The tour was at a fair price though it was just the
two of us. We discovered later in our cruise that it is much more cost
effective to do these island tours with other cruise mates thus reducing
the cost and increasing the conversation and fun. Our driver was friendly
and showed us a great deal in the 3 hours that he drove us around. We
visited Devils ridge, looked at several beaches, Nelson's Dock Yard, and a
few other destinations. He never rushed us to leave any of the
destinations and it was worth the money. We then went to a beach that was
very near the ship and had a great time. The chairs were $5 each and they
had several cabanas so shade was not hard to come buy. The beach was right
next to one of the several resorts located on the island but I can’t
remember which one now. There are a great number of taxi drivers on
Antigua and they are very eager to take you where you want to go. If I so
much as lifted an arm while at the beach there was a driver asking me if I
wanted a ride back to the ship. It actually got a bit bothersome at times.
There were also a few vendors on the beach selling various items. They
really didn’t bother us too much. I think Antigua was well worth the visit
but it didn’t end up at the top of my favorites list of destinations we
visited on our cruise. It’s certainly a Beautiful place though and I
highly encourage taking the time to see what the island has to offer.I
