Zip Line Lost World Canopy
Tour – Belize. March, 2005
We just returned from a cruise to the Western Caribbean with a stop in
Belize. Since we were going to be hitting the beach in Cozumel and tour
Chichen Itza from Progreso, we had planned this day as our “adventure
day”. The Lost World Canopy Tour offered by Carnival didn’t disappoint us.
In fact, for all 6 of us – ranging from 16 to 56 – it was decidedly the
highlight of our cruise. Zipping thru the canopy of the forest was
absolutely awesome!
It started with a bus ride, that also started with air conditioning. The
A/C disappeared about the same time that the paved road did. However, I
think everyone took it in stride and perhaps the rattles of the bus added
to the remoteness of the adventure. Our tour guide gave us a great
narration of the towns and areas we went thru and helped set the stage for
us.
The brochure explains that you should be able to climb a 20 foot ladder,
so it seemed like this shouldn’t be too exerting. Actually, it wound up
being about a 20 minute hike up the side of a hill that was pretty
exerting from some on our group. If you have COPD, do not take this tour.
All of our guides were extremely professional and that was a great comfort
given that we had 5 zip lines and 2 repels thru the forest. They could
joke around with all of us, but when it came time to get on the gear and
check us out, they were all business. I think we all felt a great sense of
confidence in the guys and gals operating the tour. Their instructions
were clear, they had a good word to say for everyone and they never once
got irritated with even the most timid of us.
Our bus made 2 bathroom/drink stops on the way and they were even prepared
with a thorough dousing of bug repellant. Trust me, you shouldn’t turn it
away. At the site, they complete your round with a survey and a drink.
Seems they thought of everything.
If you want something that is adventuresome that you don’t get anywhere
else, then this is a superb experience. If you want to have lots of photo
ops, then look elsewhere. The stands and pathways are pretty narrow and
there’s just not much room. Don’t worry about having a fear of heights. At
the Grand Canyon, I thoroughly embarrassed my entire family, but on this
tour, I was really swinging from the trees and having a super time.
