Coco Cay, Bahamas Port Review

Tania

Our ship was initially scheduled to stop at Labadee (off the coast of Haiti) for the beach stop on our Western Caribbean itinerary. Due to the political unrest, it was rescheduled to Coco Cay instead. I didn’t have enough time to look into the place before hand and we could not schedule excursions until we were on the ship or the island, so we basically played it by ear.

Our group took the Kayak Adventure tour and enjoyed it. It was a nice little ride in the kayaks. We got to see some stingrays, star fish, etc. We used plastic sea kayaks and my husband, who is usually a little tentative about tippy canoes was very comfortable in the kayak. Even to the point to initiate a full out water fight on the way back with some of our friends (WE WON)! They may be a little tricky to maneuver at first, but if you have some canoeing/ kayaking skills, you’ll be flying!

The beach is nice and the food is good (especially after a morning of kayaking). There were plenty of loungers on the beach (unlike the deck of the ship- but that’s another story!).

One word of warning, though. We thought that it was a cashless society on the island and had not brought any money along, only our ship cards. To a certain extent, this is true. Food is free and the bars and excursions use the card. There is a “Straw Market” on the island with some shopping. One of our friends wanted to buy something and did not realize that they only take cash. By the look on the sales woman’s face, this was not the first time she lost a sale that day because someone didn’t have enough money on them.

Note: if you see the nature walk sign and are intrigued, DON’T BOTHER!! It goes nowhere and only gives you another view of the tender dock!

Another note: beware of buying the drinks in the take home glasses. They cost about $2 more and how many souvenir cups can you use!!
