Costa Maya, Mexico

Costa Maya is a new
port and it is very different from Cozumel although I doubt it will remain
that way. As far as the eye can see there are jungles and it is really a
beautiful place. There really isn’t a lot to do in Costa Maya except for
hanging out at the pool by the port. The beach here is really rocky but
the pool area seemed nice. There is a little shopping center and I think
there is a small town about 5 miles away. Someone else on this review site
has said that he found good snorkeling there. We booked an excursion to
see the Mayan ruins at Kohunlich. I was a little concerned about this tour
because it takes two and a half hours to get to these ruins but I’m really
glad we went on this excursion. The tour company was fantastic. Our bus
broke down on the way there but the bus driver had realized something was
going on and he had called ahead requesting another bus. We were on our
second bus and back on the road in ten minutes. The bus itself was air
conditioned and very comfortable. Our guide was also very good. He had so
much knowledge about the ruins and the Mayan culture and he wasn’t boring
at all. The ruins themselves were okay but they were in the middle of the
jungle and we were the only tour group there, which made the whole trip
worth it. You could really imagine what life must have been like at this
location and I would recommend this tour despite the long bus ride. We had
a box lunch after the tour and they also served Pepsi and beer. The
excursion cost us $79 a person and I felt that it was well worth the cost
especially since there really wasn’t a whole lot to do at the port. The
cruise literature states that taking video at Kohunlich will cost $10,
this was not the case – it was only $4, but the important lesson here is
that you shouldn’t let it discourage you when you read the literature
saying that it’s so much. My friend almost didn’t take her video camera
thinking that she’d have to shell out $10 instead of $4. The worst that
happens is that you take your video camera, but if it’s too expensive, you
just don’t take any video.
