Costa Maya, Mexico Shore Excursion Review

Doug Eads, Contributing Editor

Puerto Costa Maya:

A Cancun area young executive, Cesar Lizarraga, wanted very much to show several of us his personal pride, and his Mayan Riviera joy, and here it is - Costa Maya refers to a broad area of coastal land in Mexico stretching many miles south of Cancun. It is the last remaining section of coastal properties yet to be developed and there are acres of pristine seaside land to be savored. Quaint fishing villages dot the landscape. They stand out amidst the natural beauty of this incredible unspoiled area.

If you should fly low along the coastline as we did in a twin engine Piper Chieftain, you will encounter numerous cenotes (often elaborate sinkholes) and you will be able to see the outlines of ancient Mayan villages that were scattered about the area many centuries ago. As we approached Puerto Costa Maya, we saw Carnival’s huge new ship, the Glory at 110,000 tons docked along with another cruise ship. The inviting Puerto Costa Maya was just below — a new port gateway to great shopping, beach breaks and adventurous shore excursions!

Puerto Costa Maya was planned with great attention to detail and resembles an ancient Mayan city. Here you have a development carved out in a thoughtful way from the vastly unspoiled Mayan lands to enhance the area. You will be quite impressed as you approach by way of your Carnival cruise ship! Puerto Costa Maya has three grand pavilions hosting cultural and culinary events. Many local artisans create unique gift items for shoppers.

Best of all, Puerto Costa Maya gives access to pristine areas of the coast, and its interior. Some people feel it's the most exotic area in the Caribbean. There is even an alligator exhibit plus a treetop swinging canopy walkway to enjoy.

Additionally, there are excellent Mayan ruins to visit in the southern state of Quintana Roo. The Kohunlich national park, which features the famous Mayan mask temple décor, is in a remote area that remains natural and unspoiled. But if you still have a lust for adventure, Puerto Costa Maya can offer 4x4 treks, Catamaran & snorkel outings, and much more.

Since this may be your last port-of-call, you might find yourself enjoying a sumptuous beachside dinner and refreshments, pleasing shopping, or just relaxation. This no-stress leisure time may be your ticket to a perfect day in paradise.

Puerto Costa Maya is not as well known as Cancun, of course — but keep your eye on this captivating port of call when you book your next cruise vacation, and look forward to it! Exploring Yucatan by both Carnival Cruise Lines and by air with a new friend Cesar Lizarraga of the Puerto Costa Maya development was unique and special treat. Lets imagine jumping ahead 20 years and remember this now quaint and remote port of call — what lies ahead for its development?

As you quietly peer out the stern deck area at the powerful wake created by your Carnival cruise ship, and then look longingly at tempting azure seas and a fading crimson sunset, you may dream of the day you can once again step upon ancient and once inaccessibly remote shores. Venture to this area — so well planned and developed, and yet serenely natural for your holiday adventures — Then you too can say this is “My Costa Maya!”
