Grand Cayman
Gena Steward
Poor Grand Cayman. Arrived via cruise ship but
had to tender in because the dock was gone from the hurricane. The island
is pretty much destroyed; no hotels were open because they had no roofs or
windows. Not a tree left standing on the island, and venturing inland it
looked as if a bomb had went off. The locals told us they had a 50-foot
tidal surge. Almost all of the jewelry stores were open downtown but no
restaurants.
I had pre-booked a snorkel cruise to Stingray
City through Capt Marvin’s www.captainmarvins.com. It is a short 4-minute
walk from the cruise ship and they were wonderful. We had about 12 people
on our boat compared to the ship’s shore excursion with 100. We each had
personal attention from the Capt. Marvin’s crew they were great! We went
to Sting Ray City and wow; I have never had an experience like that. There
were 100’s of rays and one was about 5 feet across by 7 feet long it was
huge. The kids on our boat were scared to death. I wouldn’t recommend this
to the faint-hearted child or adult for that matter. But just standing on
the boat checking everything out was a blast.
We snorkeled at the reef, water clarity was
great, and a lot of fish but most of the coral are dead. Even with the
damage, I would recommend staying in Grand Cayman they are working had to
get everything cleaned up. Almost every hotel had a work crew at it.
