Key West Port Information and Shore Excursion Review

Frank Rist III

Key West was our first stop and we docked at the navy pier there. If you have not been to Key West there are two major docks and a smaller one the USCG and the navy now use. The navy pier and the non navy pier are the only ones large enough to handle the cruise ships. Well of course being docked at the navy pier means were at a military base. So you couldn’t just walk into town at our dock of course! You had to ride a conch train into town or the trolley looking shuttle bus thru the military base. Boy oh Boy, the line for this about an hour after we docked had to be at least ¾ of the ship in length. The trains and trolley came about every 10 minutes with only about 35 people a trip; needless to say it did take a bit. We on the other had opted for a guided tour of the city so we got right on to a Conch train waiting exclusively for us. The tour was very informative and I would recommend it for anyone if it is there first time to Key West. The only thing to note here would be the only reason I could guess they wouldn’t let us into town on our own was some construction on the dock, or the fact it was quite a ways to the activity areas of town such as the bars and shops. Anything military seemed to be quite abandoned, all the ships and one sub were at another dock on the opposite side of town.
