Montego Bay, Jamaica Port Information and Shore Excursion Review

Bill Smith

We opted for a shopping tour on this stop. Our bus driver, Tommy, offered to add to the tour for another $3.00. Everyone on the bus agreed. The first stop he took us to a resort for a photo opp. Cost? Another $1. I was ticked because he didn’t tell us about the expense beforehand. I paid anyway and asked Tommy to be more upfront on any other stops. He complied with my request. Shopping was so-so. We decided to find some trinkets to take home for friends. Tommy took us to the Flea Market. Folks… talk about high pressure sales! All the shop vendors will try to lure you into their shops and if you are interested in something… never pay the starting price. We bought some items at 25% of original offer price.

We got Tommy to drop us over at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville for a couple of hours. Talk about a good time! Two DJ’s and extremely interactive. Sure was weird rooting for my daughter in the booty shaking contest! We are still negotiating on whether the video gets sent to her boyfriend! Three maggyitas and I was dooone. Thank God I wasn’t driving! Walking was hard enough! When we got back to the ship, the Jamaican guys that were playing calypso when we got off were still playing! They were playing for tips so I dropped a couple of bucks. We got back to the suite and went out on the balcony. The musicians were right below us. I noted quickly that most everyone was just passing them by without a look. To a partying drunk… that just wasn’t acceptable. The family and I began hollering to those coming back on board. Waving money and pointing at the musicians. Finally the people re-boarding started dropping the bucks. One of the drummers kept looking up at us and dancing for us! We were building a relationship! After about 20 minutes, I wrapped a 10 spot around a pen and tossed it down to them. The drummer was pleased. We kept hollering! The high school band showed up to take over and as the local calypso band was leaving… they looked up and waved good-bye.

One eeeeerrrrryyy thing about this stop. Car loads of cops with mean looks and M-16’s is not real comforting. If the tour guide tells you not to go into certain areas… take his/her advice!
