Montego Bay, Jamaica
Dan Miller
This was one stop I could have done without. We did
not book any tours at this stop because nothing looked worth the prices they
were asking ($40+ dollars to take us shopping or to a beach). As we were getting
ready to leave the ship we were warned not to shop outside the main downtown
area because it was not safe. That made us feel a little uneasy about going
ashore. We took a shuttle to the downtown at $6 per person. This town is very
run down and the people are very poor. We seen a lot of shacks that didn’t look
fit to let a animal live in, yet there were people living there. The shops were
not as run down. They looked like a real old two-story strip mall. We did not
find a lot of great buys here except for souvenirs. Very high-pressure sales
people, but it didn’t bother us much. We just said no thank you and moved on.
Don’t pay their asking price, we were able to get all items 25-50% less then
their asking price. For lunch we went to Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville. This was
a great place!!!!! Wish we would have skipped the shopping and just hung out
there all day. Be sure to try the jerked chicken. That was the best chicken I
have ever eaten. I even had to buy some of the sauce to try to make my own back
home. We talked to some of the people that shopped at the flea market (that we
were told was not a safe place) and they told us they got some real good deals
there. We seen people bringing back huge TV’s, stereos and other high ticket
items so maybe that was the place to go if you want to take a chance. Over all
we did not find anyone from our ship that liked this port, but we all agreed we
loved Margaritaville.
