Nassau, Bahamas Port Information and Shore Excursion Review

Roberta Saunier

I was pleasantly surprised by the changes I found on the pier in Nasaau since I had been there in 1995. It used to be that you were assaulted by natives offering you a "free" gift for a small donation for their children the minute you set foot on the pier. The pier is now free of this phenomenon. We made it all the way to the Welcome Center before we got bombarded by taxi drivers hawking rides to Atlantis. We did get a cab for $4/pp that took us to Cabbage Beach. I had read reviews of Cabbage Beach and was looking forward to a beautiful, sandy beach. Unfortunately, due to the string of hurricanes that had recently passed through the area, the beach was not what I expected. The sand was unusually large, grainy, and sticky. We found out later that the beach had pretty much washed away and sand had to be carted in to rebuild it. The water was warm, but a little cloudy because the surf was very rough. We kept getting knocked down just trying to get out of the water. My niece and my sister went parasailing ($45 each) and really enjoyed it. They said the view was gorgeous. There were plenty of cabs waiting to take us back to the ship. We were disappointed that the shops all closed at 5:00 pm. We thought with 3 ships in port that they would stay open on a Saturday night. The only thing we could find open after 5 was the Hard Rock. Our trip fell between Ivan and Jeanne, so I guess we were lucky to see anything of Nassau at all.
