I just
got back from a cruise on Navigator of the Seas and Ocho Rios was one of
the stops. After seeing some information on this site, I just HAD to check
out Lobster Dave's. I figured it would be a fun adventure with great
lobster. I was right.
After Dunn's we went down to Margaritaville's beach in search of Dave's,
and I went to make a left but there was no place to go. The water
basically came all the way up to the wall. So I asked one of the Jamaicans
selling goods on the beach if he knew something about getting lobster
around here. He said “you want Dave!” Right. So he went to call Dave and a
minute later Dave appeared from nowhere.
We told him how we found him through this site and he was pleased, so he
led us back to his “restaurant”. You have to cross the creek (a step and a
jump), walk 100 feet, and then you’re there. There consists of some lawn
chairs and a little kitchen area. We went over to a chest filled with fish
and told Dave what we wanted, and he proceeded to make some of the best
lobster we ever had. Was it gourmet? No. Was it sanitary? Probably not,
though neither once of us felt sick afterward and the lobster was properly
cooked.
If you consider yourself adventuresome and want to experience something
nobody else on your cruise will, I highly recommend searching Dave out. He
is a good guy who makes great lobster.
As you are off the tourist path here, a few things bear mentioning. First
of all, we felt safe. You are right next to Margaritaville and can hear
their music, and you can see your ship. But you are not in an area you are
“supposed” to be in. The tourists go to the tourist shops and
Margaritaville. They don’t mingle with Jamaicans. It is the real Jamaica
back there so make sure when you go you have an open mind. Treat them with
the respect they deserve, don’t expect any luxuries, and you will be fine.
