Roatan, Honduras

My
husband and I were in Roatan for 1 day on a cruise. We rented a taxi "for
the day". The first place we went was shopping. We were in the shop for
about 10 minutes and the taxi driver followed us around and repeatedly
asked if we were ready to leave. We then proceeded at break neck speeds
toward West End. I had told the driver that I wanted to snorkel at Sandy
Bay. He insisted that snorkeling was better at West End so he flew by the
turn off at Sandy Bay. I then insisted that we go back because I am a
travel agent and I wanted to at least get a look at it. When we got there
the taxi driver followed us around the beach, we were only there for about
5 minutes then proceeded to West End. On arrival at West End we were
overwhelmed by kids selling items and asking for money. I went in the
water for about 3 minutes and it was so nasty that I got out. My husband
snorkeled some and said you wouldn't believe all the trash that's in the
bay there. While I was on the beach some more kids came up asking for
money. On the way back to the ship we realized the kids had stolen our
camera. We had put bug spray on for the sand fleas but it didn't help
much. I noticed that alot of other people on the cruise that night had the
big red splotches from flea bites like my husband and I did. My overall
impression of Roatan is that everyone is trying to rip you off and the
beaches are not nice. I would recommend going on a ships shore excursion
to avoid having to deal with the locals.
