Roatan, Honduras Port Information and Review

George Shimek

Spent Friday on Roatan, off the Celebrity Horizon. I had made arrangements to meet Victor Bodden, a local mentioned here, but he was a no show. We were one of the first 10 people off the boat, after it docked, so there was no excuse. Picked the best English speaking taxi driver outside the fence, whose name was Hank. Hank was ex Fantasy Island scuba instructor for 17 years and even though we were not interested in scuba, he knew all the best spots dead on.

Turns out Hank followed the same tour as Victor, since Hank pointed out Victor to me. There are few roads so most tours are cookie cutter. I thought the view from the “View”, highest point looked like Hawaii, Tabyanna Beach was one of my 5 best. My list includes Paradise Island, Cozumel, Cayman, Aruba. The Island is depressed, but growing in tourism. Depressing part is the Real Estate push – a lot of Century 21, etc. The taxi drivers like to drive you through – they must get a commission if they bag a live one. These developments are US copies. One looks exactly like one where I live in Florida. All I need is blue water. I thought the Island was safe, had a great guide and the Island is not littered with tourist traps – yet.. For me a great first time visit
