Mike Malone About 344 miles from St Thomas, St. Lucia is beautiful and hilly. It is also one of the poorest and least organized of the islands. There are no speed limits or straight roads and they drive on the left side. DO NOT try to rent a car here. Most people speak English but they also speak an island Creole dialect. The beaches were beautiful and it seems like a party island. We got a taxi ($15 each way) and went to Rodney Bay. The driver was very nice and gave us a lot of history along the way. He came back at 4 to pick us up. I gave him $20 each way. We were initially worried that there wouldn’t be taxis there to take us back. Every island has more taxis than you can shake a stick at. They were all over the parking lot at the beach. We rented snorkel gear for $12 a person from the snorkel desk on the boat. $28 for the week if you want. There are a lot of local men walking up and down the beach trying to sell you trinkets. I wouldn’t put it past them to take something if the opportunity arises. It’s a poor island. Here’s a tip: They provide you beach towels on the ship. Whenever we went to a beach, we always looked for others with the towels and put our stuff in the middle of the group. We always asked the others to keep an eye on our things while we swam. We didn’t lose anything. I had a bathing suit with zippered pockets. I brought along a good zip lock and kept my drivers license, credit card, sail and sign card and cash in the bag zipped in the bathing suit.
