St. Maarten/St. Martin
Diane
We
walked off the ship and kept walking. I was looking for Little Bay. We
walked to the road and looked up and there were goats in the mountain
straight ahead of us. We walked downtown and found the most picturesque
little town with narrow roads. The town was closed and wouldn’t open till
10:30 am. We were told Little Bay was over by a resort that looked like it
had no beach (just rocks) so we stay on this bay. We rented two chairs
that came with 2 drinks at the bar behind us. We got in the water and
collected shells. It was nice being by this bar because it had a clean
restroom and not far from the sidewalk We were by ourselves at first, then
we watched this water taxi bring people over. They all came to this beach,
but not too close to us, so it was okay. Then these ladies came around
wanting to sell us stuff. There was one lady, after awhile another lady,
after awhile another lady, and so it went. By the time we were ready to go
the people were on both sides of us, and a lady was braiding this girl’s
hair right by our chair. I guess this is what you call touristy. We will
take a taxi and go to another beach next time. Anyway, we got dressed and
went shopping in the picturesque town that had become crowded and a
tourist haven. We got our souvenirs in a nice quiet store that I didn’t
feel like they were trying to rip us off. I felt like this about several
places we went and some people we talked to that they were trying to rip
us off. We walked back to the ship and bought a drink at a very colorful
place along the port. St. Maarten wasn’t my favorite place, but I feel
like it was a learning experience and it will be better next time. We
enjoyed our walk and the early morning there. The beach is not close to
the ship like one review said. We are walkers so it was a nice walk for
us. If you don’t enjoy walking I suggest the water taxi.
