St. Thomas Port Information and Shore Excursion Review

Jill

It costs less to rent a car than to buy a shore excursion for two people. We actually went ashore and rented a car on the spot (we thought about the scooters, but I would not recommend because of the steep inclines and curvy roads). You can also have your ship concierge help you rent a car in advance from the ship. Anyway, we just wanted some time to ourself. We drove most of the entire eastern part of the island, and spent some time at Magan's Beach. They charge $3 per person admission and $1 per car for parking...a good deal for a great beach. They have beach chair rental and a burger/sandwich restaurant. Exploring the island is fun and we really enjoyed the independence in the middle of our week instead of being herded in a bus or on another small boat for shore excursions. Oh, just know that the traffic is fine except very slow through Charlotte Amalie. But you can always avoid that downtown area. Don't be worried about time. We saw all that in under 3 hours. The island is small and will take less than 10 minutes to get from the north side to the south side. You could see the whole island in an afternoon easy. I was surprised how quick it was getting around.
