Itinerary: Bahamas

We departed out of Miami to go to various islands in the Bahamas. The major ports were Nassau and Freeport. This was the week of my 50th birthday and we were looking for a different adventure.

The smaller islands we visited were great...beautiful beaches, clear blue water, colorful fish, etc. Nassau and Freeport are traditional stops with shops and other routine things you see when on a traditional cruise ship.

Here's the down side - 1) the ship is old, which adds character, but you need to be prepared for things like pitiful air conditioning in the staterooms, tiny bathrooms/showers and small beds (doesn't work well with poor a/c; 2) if the weather is bad, there is nothing to do, we learned this from being in Freeport as tropical storm Katrina was in the early stages; 3) As mentioned in #2, when the weather gets bad, the upper deck is closed, so no bar service; 4) for the first few days we had a film crew on board working on a TV show on "Three-Day Weekends" a show that features couples on a long weekend vacation - this was very disruptive and it seemed the film crew and the couple they were filming (a.k.a. Ken & Barbie) were constantly pushing other guests (the ones that paid) aside to get the right "shot" - this was a pain; 5) other than sitting on the deck, there were just a few chairs, so sitting room was at a premium; and, 6) the combination floats/cushions for the deck were stinky and filthy.

The food was Ok - The first of the week was far superior. Towards the end of the week we felt like they were trying to clear out the refrigerator.

The crew was generally friendly, but there was a strong attraction to the younger female guests (Hint - I would never send a female teen on this cruise without constant supervision).

The other guests were generally Ok and we enjoyed meeting really nice people. As usual with a crowd, always a jerk or two and a couple of big mouth New Yorkers. Will we do this again? - NO.
